Our Mighty Acorns
Love and Respect
In Year 1 we start our school day at 8.30am with a quick registration and housekeeping. We then go quickly into a 25min problem solving maths activity. This is followed by a burst of P.E. in the playground before heading over to the Church House for our morning Collective Worship.
The next part of the morning the children move into their small groups and continue with their daily phonics teaching programme for reading and writing.
After a 15min snack and play break, the children are taught maths. Maths is taught in three groups, each supported by an adult with a teaching or independent task.
Topic work and PE are covered in the afternoons. Each term we start a new topic, taught through a range of exciting cross-curricular activities. Visitors to the school or visiting relevant places of interest also enrich our topics. We cover, Tiaras and Turrets, Celebrations and our Wonderful World to name a few.
RE and computing are taught as whole afternoon and morning sessions at the beginning or end of terms and also integrated into our topics. Discrete Science lessons and specialist Music lessons are taught on Thursday and Friday. The children’s hard work is rewarded with Golden time on a Friday afternoon, when they have the opportunity to move round a number of play activities.
We have lots of incentives in place for rewarding good learning behaviour on a daily basis. At the end of the week, consistent good performance is rewarded through the Star of the Week's trophy, which is given out in Assembly and reported in the Newsletter. Children also have the opportunity to earn writing awards and reading awards, which are again formally announced in Assembly.
All children take a turn helping out with various responsibilities. Generally we all work together to make a happy, hardworking and successful class and are always very proud of our achievements.
