Assessment for Learning

Assessment for learning (AFL) is an approach to teaching and learning that creates feedback which is then used to improve children’s performance. Pupils become more involved in the learning process and from this gain confidence in what they are expected to learn and to what standard. We plan for mastery of a subject and children are aware of what the difference is between achieving expected standards and mastery of a subject. In other words, children can apply their knowledge to new situations.

The teachers at Braywood plan tasks to help the children close the gap between where  they are now with their learning and where they would like to be at the end of the lesson, end of the week or end of the unit. Children are involved in their learning and the teachers provide the learning pathway for the children to follow e.g where they are now, where they are going and how to get there. This process is a natural part of every lesson, adapted to suit every child's needs.
